I hope I'm not being too presumptuous in making a new thread here. (if I am, just smack me and erase it) but I had a few silly, frivilous questions rolling around in my head, here's a few and anyone can answer: 1) I know there's no specific (human) race attributed to an animal species in Omaha. (As I've seen dogs and cats that are black, white and asian) but I'm curious about the folks with the true animal markings. (like Chuck's stripes or the spotted dog) What, if any, 'race' would they fall under? 2) I noticed that all the characters (at least the main and secondary ones) have short or slim tails. I know there's not too many diverse species in the series but I was wondering how a character with a big tail would be handled, like a skunk or a squirrell? And to Mr. Waller himself: How would you handle it in your style? 3) And can we please PLEASE see some more of Joanne and CeeCee?! they are my Fave characters. 4) and last but not least, something that I've always wanted to do. (and it didn't hurt that a few fans wanted it too) I never really got to thank you, Mr. Waller and Kate for giving us all such a spendid story to fall into, I've always wanted to draw Omaha for you,so the question is, would you mind? There, sorry to fanboy, have a good day.

Since the furry component of Omaha is symbolic rather than real, the question of what the markings "mean" is one that follows dream logic rather than any set of rules. You're better off forgetting about trying to categorize the zoomorphs you see, and instead just pretend it's the regular world, and you're on drugs and hallucinating the animal heads on everybody. This will lead you to a truer interpretation of the material.
Jerry, a collie, has a big tail. So does Joanne's attorney Judith (a fox), and so does Rob (a cocker spaniel). They're not big tails by furry standards, but they represent how I handle big tails. Remember that this is symbolism, and we're not talking about animals at all here. Tails represent a character's connection to their own past.
IF the book continues, you can bet there will be much more of them, especially Joanne, who is of course the 4th most important character in the story.
I've never minded before, why should I start now? It's flattering. It was exciting to see Omaha rendered by so many artists I admired in the "Images" books ... I was told a funny story by a staffer at Marvel ... he was saying one of the people there (he didnt name names) took a shot at drawing Omaha, and then looked up with amazement from the page, and exclaimed, "I never realized before that Omaha is a CARTOON CHARACTER!"

"You're better off forgetting about trying to categorize the zoomorphs you see, and instead just pretend it's the regular world, and you're on drugs and hallucinating the animal heads on everybody. This will lead you to a truer interpretation of the material." True enough, I was even thinking that after I sent the message, sorta banging my head against the table feeling stupid. but it does bring up another question: Granted, this story could've been done with humans but what made you decide the animal motif? Just wanted something different, wanted a wider variety of folks to tell the story, etc? And 2) You mentioned you didn't like how the art looked back then. (like all of us artists, we don't like our work 15 minutes after) What would you say were (are) your greatest improvements between then and now? As in areas of art as opposed to finished projects. 3) Smack me if I ask too many questions here, I think it's just cool to be chatting with ya.

Now here I was expecting silly questions and all I can read are reasonably astute ones. Looks like I'll have to fill the breach:
Would Omaha perfer Friskies or IAMS?
Will Chuck get over the fact that more folks still buy Garfield crap?
Since Joanne is a bird, how does she smell? (TERRIFFIC!)
Will you give me a ten second head start before throwing things at me? ;D

Granted, this story could've been done with humans but what made you decide the animal motif? Just wanted something different, wanted a wider variety of folks to tell the story, etc? There were good reasons. I'll discuss them, but first, let's be truthful .. the medium came first, and suggested the material, not the other way around. I was in love with funny animal comics, and their erotic possibilities hinted at depths beneath the surface of the medium, and got me to thinking. (I will not deny that chemicals may have been involved as well.) As many fans know, Omaha did not burst full blown from my brow, it evolved out of the experimental work I was doing in VOOTIE. What I learned playing with cartoon characters, was that cartoon characters have a higher emotional appeal than "realistic" drawn characters, who tend to evoke critical scrutiny from readers because of the very fact that they're supposed to be "realistic." That scrutiny gets in the way of the suspension of disbelief that is necessary for any fiction to work. The kind of material I wanted to do, was something that would engage the reader emotionally in the lives of its characters. And, having seen that cartoons could be accepted as real people more easily than the semi-cartoons in mainstream comics, I took the next logical step. It was obvious that if I wanted to discuss sex, and related themes, funny animals would be the best ... the obvious visual pun referring to the animal nature of human passions. A corny but effective reminder that people are also animals, was always there on the page. So, to summarize: first and foremost, cartoon characters because cartoons are more immersive and more plastic than realistic illustrations. And secondly, funny animals because people's physical drives was part of the subject matter. You mentioned you didn't like how the art looked back then. (like all of us artists, we don't like our work 15 minutes after) What would you say were (are) your greatest improvements between then and now? As in areas of art as opposed to finished projects. I don't know what to say to that, since I haven't taken up a brush since 1995 when Omaha was stopped. Since then my activities have been almost entirely on the computer, a new medium which I was beginning to get interested in even as Omaha was going.

Would Omaha perfer Friskies or IAMS? Would you offer someone with Omaha's class dry cat food when there's Sheba? or even real tuna! what a cheapskate! You don't deserve her, she's too good for you! Get yourself an ant farm. It's only natural that people feel less threatened by someone who's fat, lazy and stupid than by someone who's creative, bright, good looking and good in bed. They can identify with him better, too. She obviously smells good enough so that nobody has kicked her out of the sack yet. No.

Heh, good one Doodles, I guess my questions weren't silly enough, though I can think of some silly situations. like Chuck drawing online comics in his spare time, or turning the mansion into an all girl's dormitory. (and subsequently sell hidden video on the net) but hey, that's just me.

Here's a thought; (I have too many of them while I'm at work) if Omaha's story was modernized, it would be interesting to see some of the characters acclimate. Like Omaha putting her resume in an online modelling agency, Chuck working on the computer, drawing with a Wacom Tablet, Joanne taking pictures of herself with a webcam and putting them on paysites. Heck, even Rob using digital cameras. Y'know, stuff we sorta take for granted these days. You know they'd all bow down to the net, you can't resist email.

The temptation to do all this would be terrific. Even back in 1995 before the internet boom, it was already difficult to keep the story in period.

If/when the story of Omaha is wrapped up, are you considering a post script, showing where the characters are today? I think that would be a fascinating capstone to a wonderful series -Wyatt (Hoping to win the lottery so he can pay for Omaha to finish)

Yes, that would be very interesting. To stretch that on; Omaha may well be running a club by now. (Or of course be a Senator, you get the point!)

Hi, my boyfriend is a big fan of Omaha. Today he gave me his stack of unbagged issues to read and now that I'm through with them (great story by the way, I only wish I'd heard of it earlier) I thought I'd ask a quick question.
I cannot seem to find any of the Omaha posters or other merchandise for sale online anywhere, even ebay! Is there a way that I can still order a poster or something even though the series is done?
